My Pond

The pond was given to me in 2007 and it was hardly in place, two weeks, when two lots of frog spawn were deposited at one corner of it. Since then it has been full of tadpoles and every time I look there seems to be more frogs.

A few weeks ago I thought that I had a record number of frogs for a small pond when I counted five but today I was surprised to find seven and there are possibly more. Even more surprising was to find some tadpoles still swimming around in it as well.

I took my camera and tripod up to the wildlife garden and the kneeling stool for the garden came in useful for sitting on. A quiet wait produced some fairly good photos but I could have done with a better zoom.

As you will see one frog turned round to face the camera and others lined up by the side of the pond. There is a stone just under the water that seems to be very popular with them all.

The more you watch frogs the more interesting they become. My cat has had they tendency to bring the frogs home, not a pretty site as frogs limbs are sticking out of each side of his mouth but strangely, they seem to have all survived. Watching them in the pond today I have found the larger frogs seem to form a line with the smaller ones neatly in a queue behind them. Then one will come up from below the water and they all shift. This means keeping still with your finger on the camera ready to shoot. Just fascinating. Look up Froglife for more information and details on how to watch and report on the frogs in your area.
